HMS Victory and the ship that almost sank Admiral Lord Nelson

The ship that nearly sank Admiral Lord Nelson HMS Victory has been named and shamed. It was not a French man o'war at the battle of Trafalgar but, almost a century later, a battered British ironclad called Neptune, which broke free while being towed to be scrapped, smashed into Victory in Portsmouth harbour, and left the sea flooding through a gaping hole below the waterline.

"If it hadn't been for the centenary of Trafalgar on the horizon, there's no doubt Victory would have been scrapped

Admiral Lord Nelson
